Before deciding to switch to a propane system, it’s important to check each appliance and see if it is compatible with propane energy. Some states require every appliance to supply conversion kits so that propane energy can be utilized, but this is not always the case. For appliances and RVs that don’t offer a conversion kit, one must be purchased. The most important thing to remember when switching to a propane system is that your RV engine and appliances will work with this type of energy. Once you’re sure that everything is ready for the conversion, you can begin the process.
As mentioned before, the sizes of propane tanks vary, but most of them have a similar layout. Containers are generally filled to 80% capacity so that the vapor has room to expand and avoid the container reaching critical pressure. The gas that will run to the appliances is regulated through a series of valves that increase or decrease the internal pressure. Other devices called regulators will adjust the pressure accordingly in order to feed the right amount to each appliance. The gas is then fed through a series of pipes and fed directly to the appliances.
Other important parts of a propane system include:
Filler Valve – The valve where liquid propane is put into the tank. This should always be fitted with a protective cover so that no impurities are let into the mix which could cause clogging.
Vapor Return Valve – Allows the pressure within the tank to be equalized while the tank is being filled. This should also include a protective covering in order to avoid clogs.
Fixed Liquid Level Gauge – The way to measure when the tank is filled to 80% capacity to allow enough room for the gas to expand.
Service Valve – The device that controls the flow of propane gas to appliances. This is where the pressure is regulated in order to supply the right amount of gas to make each appliance function.
Pressure Gauge – A reading of how many pounds of pressure is inside the tank.
Although it might seem like a complicated process, installing a propane system in your home or RV is actually quite simple. All it takes is a slight understanding of how the system works and a kit that makes it easy to convert your old system. Many individuals speak worlds about propane and how much more efficient it can be than gas powered appliances.
